Jonas Forever

One year ago, in November 2022, Jonas arrived in Sarajevo. He stayed the entire winter, despite the snow, first in the EUFOR-base in Butmir, then in the area of Bojnik. And nearly each night he spent in the same tree in Grbavica. In May of this year, he finally flew back to Austria. Some of us were wondering if Jonas might come back this year. But, unfortuntately, I now received the news by the Waldrapp-team in Austria that Jonas died some weeks ago, in Italy, near Naples. The reasons for his death are still unclear.During his stay in Sarajevo, Jonas had become an local celebrity, with reports in local media, including tv. Bald ibises are among the rarest birds in the world, there are only some hundreds of them in Europe. And so it was indeed a small sensation to have Jonas here. It was during his first migration from Austria (where Jonas was born in April 2022) towards Tuscany where he was supposed to spend the winter, when he somehow decided to leave his group and fly on his own to Sarajevo. A spectacular bird, so funny to watch. I have still no idea how he made it through the winter and found food when Sarajevo was several times covered by snow for a week in a row. But somehow he made it. Jonas obviously liked Sarajevo, and Sarajevo treated him well. In this video we see some moments of Jonas’ remarkable stay in Sarajevo. The first part shows him in the tree in Grbavica where he arrived nearly every evening, cleaning himself before he went to sleep, and then leave again the next morning to fly back around 10 km to Sarajevsko Polje. A big thanks again to the family who welcomed me in their appartement so I could film Jonas, and who watched him day by day with a lot of care and attention. The second part shows him in the Bojnik area in early March (it was the first time I saw Joans in this area, and it was pure coincidence as I drove past in my car towards Vrelo Bosne): We see him here foraging and digging in the ground with his long beak until he finds a worm. The third clip is on the market square in Bojnik (once I knew he was in this area, he was easy to find), it was in April 2023, Jonas is perched on a hut, and we can see him even catching insects flying by.Jonas – Geronticus eremita / Ćelavi ibis / Northern bald ibis / Waldrapp / Ibis chauve (Sarajevo / Grbavica, 28.1.2023 ; Sarajevo / Bojnik area, 5.3.2023 ; Sarajevo / Bojnik, 12.4.2023)
